Camp Instructor Spotlight: David Spencer

There’s no debate – David is the “trumpet OG” of PRIZM Ensemble. Since our founding in 2005, he’s been involved in PRIZM’s year-round educational outreach programs and played in our chamber orchestra, including the milestone MLK50 concert in 2018. We’re thrilled to have him back for Week 1 and 2 of our summer music camp, during which he will coach chamber ensembles, lead brass masterclasses and teach audition preparation workshops.

Outside of teaching music for our summer camp and PRIZM in the Schools programs, David is a professor of trumpet at the University of Memphis’ Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. He has also served as a visiting international professor at the Shanghai Conservatory in China and Conservatorio Tatui in São Paulo, Brazil.

More fun facts about David:

  • For 25 years, he has played principal trumpet for Broadway and concert tours at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.
  • He is a founding member of the Memphis Brass Quintet at UofM.
  • He has been on tour playing backup for the late tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
  • He premiered Christian Lindberg’s concerto “Akbank Bunka” across the United States and Asia.
  • He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music from the University of North Texas.

Students, not only trumpetists, can learn from this musical mastermind this summer by signing up today for our 2021 summer music camp. Stay tuned for details to catch David in performance with fellow faculty members during the two-week camp.
