Introducing the 2020-21 Student Advisory Council

Meet the inaugural class of PRIZM’s Student Advisory Council! These students have shared their talents in previous PRIZM programs and served as ambassadors in the community. As council members, they will assist with educational programming and spread awareness of PRIZM among peers. Learn more about the team and why they chose PRIZM.

Lindsey Baker – Bassoon

What did you enjoy about your PRIZM experience?

My favorite part of my experiences at PRIZM is the ability to play with other students from all over the city and learn from professionals from all over the world. One of the most impactful things is that students are expected and encouraged to offer opinions and input into the group’s playing. In a traditional band or orchestra setting, students don’t have the same opportunities to offer suggestions about phrasing and other musical elements the way that ensemble members in chamber music do.

How did PRIZM impact you?

PRIZM made a huge impact on me because I’ve been involved since early middle school through high school. I can honestly say I have no idea what kind of person I would be without it, as the skills I’ve learned and improved as a result of the festival are essential to my everyday life. I’ve definitely become more confident in offering my opinions, and the friendships I’ve made over the years have opened my eyes to the importance of making connections outside of your neighborhood or school environment.

Why do you recommend PRIZM to other students?

I cannot recommend PRIZM enough! I believe that all students involved in the festival have become better because of it. Whether you aspire to play music professionally, or you’re like me and want to develop a lifelong passion, I strongly suggest you check out the festival. Just being exposed to the musicians and people involved with the festival is well worth it!

What did you enjoy about your PRIZM experience?

My favorite thing about my PRIZM experience was my exposure to a wonderful new world of chamber music. I had the wonderful opportunity to play with many skilled musicians of different backgrounds, learning how to communicate musical ideas to others without a conductor.

How did PRIZM impact you?

I can honestly say that PRIZM allowed me to refine my playing through extensive coaching from great players and teachers. It allowed me a judgment-free environment where my friends and I could just be ourselves while doing what we love. I would most definitely recommend PRIZM to other students who are looking to delve into chamber music or looking for an opportunity to just play music!

Gabriella Dotson – Horn

What did you enjoy about your PRIZM experience?

The staff! Over the three years of being a part of the program, I have met many people from around the world. PRIZM has allowed me to make connections with musicians I never would have met on my own. The staff at PRIZM always make the experience 10 times more enjoyable because of their kindness and amazing personalities. The musicians at PRIZM are truly special and they each taught me something different. I still remember my first horn instructor! The relationships made with the staff is something I know I will never forget.

How did PRIZM impact you?

PRIZM has impacted the way I approach my instrument. It was through PRIZM that I met an instructor that taught me a different approach to my instrument, which has made me a stronger player. Through their instruction, I have grown to become a better person today.

Why do you recommend PRIZM to other students?

PRIZM allows students to experience a different type of ensemble. Most students who I know that play instruments have never heard of a chamber group. An experience at PRIZM could open their eyes to things they didn’t know about. I want others to experience the excellent opportunities and development that I have at PRIZM.

Micah Watkins – Cello

What did you enjoy about your PRIZM experience?

My favorite thing about my PRIZM experience was the people it brought into my life. PRIZM acquainted me with people of my age who shared my same interests in music, which is very hard to find in school.

How did PRIZM impact you?

By introducing me to chamber music, PRIZM helped me expand my musical knowledge and how I listen to music. I was also given several opportunities to share my music along with my peers at various engagements like church performances, Christmas parties, art shows and more, which helped me to become a more poised young cellist.

Why do you recommend PRIZM to other students?

I would eagerly recommend PRIZM to other students because it has done wonders for me and I believe that it could do even more for others. This program truly helped me to step out of my comfort zone by enforcing a “challenge by choice” mindset that boosted my overall self-confidence.
